So, picture this: five years on the road, cruising through Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, and passing through Europe all the way up to Finland in a Mercedes Vito that's more car than van.Compact, yeah, but perfect for squeezing into city parking spots and blending into the urban chaos. Our ride wasn't just wheels; it was a home, an office, and the space where artistic dreams took shape. Yep, I this wild ride was part of my past life.
Additionally, while doing van life, I was also skateboarding and surfing a lot, adding a thrilling layer to the nomadic artist lifestyle. Whether navigating city streets or catching waves along the coast, these experiences became an integral part of my van life narrative.Living on the road wasn't just a lifestyle; it was a bit of a philosophy. Breaking free from the norm, creating a narrative, and discovering that inspiration can be found on the open road. Van life wasn't just a journey; it was an exploration of self and creativity.

Pantone's choice of 'Peach Fuzz' for 2024 is a nod to warmth, sophistication, and timeless elegance. Can not wait to use this on my designs.
'Peach Fuzz' wallpaper can redefine the ambiance of a room, adding a touch of sophistication and charm. The subtle hue serves as an ideal backdrop for various decor styles, from minimalist to eclectic. I designed this wallpaper for Spoonflower, and it will be available for sale in January 2024.
This Minted challenge was about going all out with creativity, diving into the world of photographic mixed media.
Mixing photography with the expressive vibes of acrylic painting. Just so you know, all my shots were taken with trusty Canon 7D camera.
The Camera Ready Fine Art Photography Challenge was good canvas to show off my style with photographic mixed media style. With these submissions, I tried to go beyond the usual limits of photography, mixing each image with a special combo of reality and artistic flair. Endless possibilities that pop up when photography and painting come together. Beauty comes from the smooth blend of different mediums.

As designers, we have access to various platforms that provide opportunities to showcase and sell our work. I have been a featured designer on Patternbank for a considerable amount of time. I have been uploading designs since 2014. PATTERNBANK SUSANNA NOUSIAINEN DESIGNER PROFILE This platform, in my opinion, has been a bit mysterious as you do not get much information regarding who is behind it. Doing some research, you can see that the main figure behind this website is Neil Elliott, Co-Founder & Director at Patternbank. There are some interviews you can find regarding selling on this platform, and designers have also made some YouTube videos, but in general, this platform could provide more information about why, how, and with whom they run it. While some designers choose to distance themselves from pattern bank sites, there are compelling reasons why platforms like Patternbank can be a beneficial choice for designers. Patternbank has a big community of designers, and following what others do can elevate the quality of work and create an environment where designers learn from each other, fostering growth and innovation. In the beginning, I felt the quality was better; however, during the last few years, I feel there is a bit of a lack of quality, but I still learn a lot about trends and what others are doing through this platform. Contrary to the notion that pattern banks undermine the value of design, they offer a gateway for designers to reach a broader audience. Patternbank has achieved a very good Google position over the years, which is one of the reasons why I decided to continue submitting works to them. Some of my designs are shown on very good positions on Google with my name featured, so I believe this gives me visibility in general. I still have to think about some future strategies, though. Patternbank also provides accessibility to a diverse range of clients and projects that might not have been possible through traditional means. I have sold designs for kids, men and women's accessories, clothing, beach products, beachwear, swimwear, sportswear, accessories, and much more. While it's true that pattern banks often require exclusive rights to uploaded designs, this exclusivity can be viewed as a strategic move rather than a limitation. Exclusive rights also contribute to a sense of security for designers, knowing that creations won't be replicated across multiple platforms without the designer's consent. I can always take down the design from Patternbank and then sell it elsewhere. The critique of the compensation model for this site is valid, as designers get 50% of sales, but it's essential to consider the broader picture. For emerging designers or those looking to diversify their income streams, the platform provides an avenue to turn their passion into profit. For me, the decision to continue with this platform has been about visibility. I sometimes wonder if the price structure will decrease my value as a designer, but then I am reassured that the visibility in Google search is compensating for this. Choosing to be part of this site is not an act of giving away work for free; rather, it's a decision to leverage my skills and creativity in a dynamic marketplace. This site gives me essential information about current trends, and with their "trending now" posts, I can see what customers are looking for. Do you have any questions regarding this blog post? In my journey through the realms of design and entrepreneurship, I've learned that staying ahead of the curve is one key to success. Yes, just one... A platform that I've found particularly conducive to selling my surface pattern designs is Spoonflower. I began submitting designs to them around 2012. During those days, I submitted a Christmas-themed design featuring snowflakes to a Spoonflower design challenge, and it became one of the top 10 designs. Back then, Spoonflower also provided pictures of the printed fabric.
I love how print-on-demand services like Spoonflower not only offer a sustainable way to sell designs but also enable me to respond to trends. For instance, if I spot a trend I like, I can design a pattern for it and upload it to Spoonflower. However, I have to order a proof of this design before I can sell it. I hope that in the future, they will remove the proof ordering process to reduce fabric waste, as it's sometimes challenging to figure out what to do with the small swatches. Nonetheless, I will assess how the colors turn out and apply what I learn about sizes and colors to my future designs on Spoonflowers or other platform as Rasberry Creek Fabrics.
Traditional methods of printing and manufacturing often involve large batches and significant upfront costs so, as a solo designer I would imagine it to be quite difficult as a fabric seller. I know some designers do this successfully, but it requires some upfront investment. Spoonflower's print-on-demand model, on the other hand, allows for the printing of designs as orders are placed. This eliminates the need for excess inventory, reducing waste, and mitigating the financial risks associated with large print runs. I particularly appreciate the reduction of waste, as there's no need to print something without demand. Spoonflower also offers eco-friendly fabric options, such as organic cotton knit, allowing me to contribute to a greener planet.

I am Susanna Nousiainen, an artist and surface pattern designer working in the field since 2010. I hold an MA degree from Aalto University in textile art. My artistic style is influenced by my Nordic roots, but through my travels, I've blended Scandinavian aesthetics with brighter colors and shapes.
Passive Income through Print-on-Demand (POD):
Print-on-Demand platforms emerged over a decade ago, revolutionizing how artists could sell their designs/art. In the early days, I had accounts on Society6, Redbubble, Zazzle, Shop Vida, etc. Although not initially successful, collectively, with multiple platforms, I managed to generate some income. Unfortunately, I deleted several accounts due to the lack of immediate success. Now, in hindsight, I regret this decision as some products were selling. Ten years ago, even less successful artists on platforms like Society6 were making around 4000 euros a month.
I must note that a decision leading to the closure of my Society6 account was prompted by discovering my design being sold in an Asian shop, (in Hong Kong). Upon inquiry, Society6 explained it was part of an affiliate program but I never made any sales with that design..., It is better to carefully read the terms of use on each platform and ensure platforms offering royalty payments also pay for third-party sales.
Having your own website gives you complete control over your sales process. I have always favored this option because it allows you to control sales volumes, and direct selling enables you to retain all profits (minus minimal transaction fees). However, this approach requires effort to attract customers, necessitating the use of marketing strategies such as social media promotion, content creation, and search engine optimization to drive traffic to your website.
If you aspire to be a digital nomad, this option may not be the best, as I discovered. Having a substantial stock of items and the need to move them frequently can be impractical.
Collaborating with a pattern design studio can offer opportunities to showcase your designs to clients or agents. While the earnings from studio sales may be lower compared to direct customer sales, the volume of sales can make up for it.
I worked with a US-based studio back in 2006-07, and they sold a lot of my designs—around 10-20 per month. However, I've noticed a decline in sales in recent years. In a recent attempt to collaborate with another US-based studio, they only sold one design in four months. One downside of working with US studios, especially if you are not based in the US, is the difficulty in controlling their sales. I speak from experience, but that's another story...
Pattern Design Agent:
Working with a pattern design agent has, in my experience, been the most controllable and honest option, especially if you are not inclined to handle marketing and client acquisition on your own. This approach can also lead to higher earnings for your designs compared to a studio partnership. Agents specialize in marketing and selling your patterns, providing you with better rights and increased exposure. Partner with an agent who has a strong track record in the industry.
Conclusion:
Earning money in surface pattern design is a realistic goal if you leverage online platforms, explore different revenue streams, and establish your brand. From print-on-demand platforms to digital courses, licensing opportunities, and direct selling, there are numerous paths to success. Consider your personal preferences, artistic goals, and the level of involvement you desire when choosing your income-generating strategies. Remember to stay persistent, continue learning, and adapt to industry trends to thrive as a surface pattern designer.

One strategy for you, seeking broader exposure and financial success is art licensing. Partnering with brands can provide a good platform for you to showcase your talent and secure opportunities. |
Understand the basics:
Art licensing is the process of granting permission to use your work in various commercial applications, such as product designs, packaging, apparel, home decor, and more. By partnering with brands, you can leverage the brand's extensive reach and resources to gain access to a wider audience and establish yourself as a recognized creator.
|
Develop a Strong Artistic Identity:
Before approaching brands, it's good for you to establish your artistic identity. Developing a consistent and recognizable style helps brands understand what unique value you bring to the table. Building a strong portfolio that showcases a diverse range of your artwork will also demonstrate your versatility and creativity, making it more appealing to potential brand partners.
|
Research and Identify Suitable Brands: Thorough research is essential for you to identify brands that align with your vision and target audience. Look for brands that share similar values, aesthetics, and target demographics. Analyze their existing product lines and collaborations to assess if your artwork would be a good fit. It's essential for you to understand the brand's ethos and target market to ensure a successful partnership.
|
Create a Compelling Pitch: Crafting a compelling pitch is vital for you to capture the attention of brands. Start by introducing yourself and your artistic journey, emphasizing your unique style and what sets you apart. Showcase your portfolio, highlighting pieces that resonate with the brand's aesthetic. Clearly articulate the potential benefits of a partnership, such as how your artwork can enhance their products or bring a fresh perspective to their brand identity. |
Network and Seek Opportunities: Networking plays a pivotal role in the art licensing process. Attend industry events, art exhibitions, and trade shows where big brands and licensing agents are present. Connect with professionals in the field, including licensing managers, art directors, and agents, to expand your network. Online platforms and social media can also be valuable tools for you to connect with potential partners.
|
Protect Your Intellectual Property: As an artist, it's crucial for you to safeguard your intellectual property rights throughout the licensing process. Before entering into any agreement, consult with a legal professional who specializes in art licensing to ensure your rights are protected. Understand the terms and conditions of any licensing agreement and negotiate fair compensation for the use of your artwork.
|
Maintain Professionalism and Collaboration: Once you've secured a licensing partnership, maintaining professionalism and open communication is key. Collaborate closely with the brand to ensure your artwork aligns with their requirements and vision. Be receptive to feedback and actively participate in the creative process, fostering a positive working relationship. |
